What Is a TRV or Thermostatic Radiator Valve?

A Thermostatic Radiator Valve (or TRV) is a valve which is fitted to a radiator in a hot water heating system that is self-regulating (sets the temperature of the radiator automatically) based on the temperature of the room. It controls the room temperature by altering the flow of hot water to the radiator.

Bathrooms: A TRV No-No

Don’t make the mistake of installing a thermostatic radiator valve in your bathroom, as the heat produced by your shower or bath will wreak havoc with the TRV’s thermostat. Instead of preventing the condensation that often hinders bathrooms, the TRV will shut off and do nothing.

How to Unstick a Thermostatic Radiator Valve?

A sticking valve is probably the most common thermostatic radiator valve issue. Whether open or closed, it’s going to cause real hassle in the long run. It usually happens when adjusting the valve for the first time in a long time, such as following an extended cold spell or the summer (often one and the same!).

What's Two wire thermostats and Millivolt thermostats?

The illustration is the interior of a common two wire heat-only household thermostat, used to regulate a gas-fired heater via an electric gas valve. Similar mechanisms may also be used to control oil furnaces, boilers, boiler zone valves, electric attic fans, electric furnaces, electric baseboard heaters, and household appliances such as refrigerators, coffee pots and hair dryers. The power through the thermostat is provided by the heating device and may range from millivolts to 240 volts in common North American construction, and is used to control the heating system either directly (electric baseboard heaters and some electric furnaces) or indirectly (all gas, oil and forced hot water systems). Due to the variety of possible voltages and currents available at the thermostat, caution must be taken when selecting a replacement device.
